Fundraising Letter

July 20th, 2012

Dear Waterville and Cambridge Neighbors,

As you may know I have decided to run for the Vermont House of Representatives with the hope of serving my neighbors and friends in our Towns of Cambridge and Waterville. I have discovered that this experience can both boost one’s ego and also be very humbling. It is wonderful to realize how many people like what I stand for; at the same time, it is humbling to stand in front of everyone in our community and ask for your support.

For the past twenty years I have served as a board member of the Lamoille Union Middle and High School and the Green Mountain Technology and Career Center. Through this experience and my participation in Cambridge Town Meeting, I have developed a deep appreciation for our Vermont tradition of coming together to debate and search for the best possible solutions to the issues we face. I have come to believe that the best governance works by having conversations with people at the local level and bringing those ideas to Montpelier to set a vision of what we can become. Our communities can realize that vision by adopting solutions that work best for their individual situations.

2010’s Act 153 and 2012’s Act 156 are great examples of this ideal: the legislation identifies the possible efficiencies and improved student outcomes of school district consolidation and encourages communities to consider the policy. Through my experiences as a mentoring coordinator, school board member, ski school and summer camp director at Smuggs’, I have formed my own ideas of how we Vermonters can work to become stronger in the areas of education, best use of resources, tourism and economic development.  The wonderful thing about running for this office is that every day my thinking is being modified as I talk with each of you.  Through this process of asking for your ideas and brainstorming how we might combine our ideas to come up with the best solutions, I believe I can come to represent you very well.

I plan on sharing our potential solutions on our “Front Porch Forum” – as well as on our neighbors’ front porches – over the next few months. I’m also going to print palm cards, mailings, and lawn signs to get the word out that I am a great choice to represent Waterville and Cambridge.  My treasurer and I have created a budget and know that we could spend up to $4,000.00 in this election. With less than four months to go before the election, it’s time to get my message of community pride and community service out to the voters. If you believe that I would be a strong voice for the district, please consider making a contribution of $25, $50, $100, or $200 to support the campaign.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Sincerely,

Peter Ingvoldstad

P.S. You are invited to a Friend Raiser at the Brewster River Camp Ground on Sunday, August 19th from 4 to 6 p.m.   We are planning a fun afternoon of playing in the Brewster River – Falls at the Camp Ground, a great band (Roulette) playing some good tunes and having fun with everyone’s help on the rhythm instrument bag.   In order to keep costs down and old home flavor high we are inviting folks to bring a salad, or a desert, or a few ears of corn or something to share in the way of drinks.  The only thing missing from the old days will be the barn raising.  Instead I may make a few comments about the future.   Hope you can join us.

Peter Ingvoldstad announces his candidacy for the Lamoille 3 House District (Cambridge and Waterville)

Peter Ingvoldstad announces his candidacy for the Lamoille 3 House District (Cambridge and Waterville)

As a long time and retired Ski School and Camps Director at Smugglers’ Notch and Coordinator for the Lamoille Valley Mentoring Partnership, I believe that I could be a great choice for your Representative to the Vermont House.  I have also served our community on our Lamoille Union School Board for twenty years and you may have seen me around town volunteering in several different capacities.  For example, you may have seen me flooding and scraping the ice rink by the Cambridge Elementary School, used by people from all over Lamoille County  The Ice rink is another example of people coming together to make good things happen for our community and I just like to be part of those efforts.

I was reminded by a good friend as we celebrated the coming of high speed internet to Cambridge and Waterville that I chaired the Cambridge Crossroads work that brought our community together to explore our past and present and then brainstormed what we wanted for the future of our community.  One of the three major objectives we came up with was the ability for all who live here to have high speed internet.  Again, this week we are celebrating that this is becoming a reality.  All of you who came together in that process should be celebrating your commitment to our community and the results that have come from the fact that you showed up to be a part of that process, a process that was a great example of democracy at work.  We came together to express our opinions and then voting to prioritize what was the most important to the majority.

Smugglers’ Notch Resort has received many accolades over the years, in particular magazines surveys filled out by readers have said that we were the best resort for family fun in North America.  I believe that Smugglers’ kept me around for thirty five years because of practices I employed there.  I dare to dream crazy dreams and talk about them.  I listen to other people as they dream and get excited about helping them realize their dreams.  My best work at Smuggs' happened when I was able to sit around with folks and say simply "Wouldn't be cool if?" and then sit back and listened and then simply say "How could we make that happen?"  And then "Who else could we get involved in making this happen?"  And finally the conversations would be about how "We believe that it could happen.........." and there were some pretty neat things that happened at Smuggs' over the years, not because there was this brilliant guy named Peter but because I loved to dream. I loved to share other people’s dreams. I got stoked when everyone got together and worked to make the dreams really work.

I think that maybe this is why, for some reason Floyd Neese and others saw something that would be of value to the people of Cambridge and Waterville in a Representative to the Vermont House.  My passion is helping people realize dreams.

Announce for House Campaign

Peter Ingvoldstad wishing to serve you as your representative to the Vermont House of Representatives

I wish to announce my intention to run for the Waterville, Cambridge House of Representatives seat as a Democrat.  My hope is that in the next few months that Bernie Juskiewicz, Justin Marsh and I can learn from you, what you want from your state government and let you know how we would represent you if elected.  I know Bernie as a Republican and Justin as an Indapendant share my desire to serve our community but we will differ on how to best do so.

As I considered whether to run or not, I made this list of ways I would like to work to improve our state through legislation.  These are my basic beliefs that I would filter and work for legislation on.

·         Encourage an educational system that provides multiple pathways to success, to better insure that all students become self- motivated to develop their capacity educationally, socially, and physically.

·         Develop and support human service programs that encourage responsibility and personal growth, not hand outs.

·         Reward volunteerism that builds community and the positive growth of all our children

·         Continue to develop and support strategies that make Vermont a place people want to visit and live.

·         Research and Develop transportation and energy systems that make use of best thinking at present to balance the short term needs of Vermonters with the long term needs of our environment.

·         Promote access to reasonable healthcare for all.

·         Support governmental policies that build community and our Vermont way of life that are fiscally responsible.

I would love to listen and discuss your views and clarify mine in the coming months.

I will spend the day this Saturday, May 26th sitting at the Cambridge Transfer Station (Dump Day) hoping that you will sign my petition to run and let me know how I might best serve you.

Peter
